What we do

Supporting those in need

Sussex Freemasons support those in need in our Sussex communities, from food banks to scout groups, from dementia care to hospice support. We also contribute to wider needs such as national charities of significance to particular Lodges and international disaster and humanitarian relief.

Over Three Million Teddies Distributed

Two examples of charities that are actively and regularly supported by Sussex lodges are the Teddies for Loving Care Appeal (tlcappeal.org) and the Masonic Trout and Salmon Fishing Charity (mtsfc.org.uk)

The Teddies for Loving Care Appeal provides teddy bears and soft toys, free of charge, to Accident and Emergency units, for the medical staff, to give, at their discretion, to children admitted who are in severe distress and where the staff feel that a teddy or soft toy to cuddle will help alleviate the stress and assist them in their work.

The children keep the teddy and take it home with them. Since the Appeal was founded over Three Million teddies have been distributed, with over 100,000 being paid for and distributed within Sussex.

Masonic Fishing Charity

The Masonic Fishing Charity’s aim is to bring an interactive fishing and countryside experience to people with special needs. It does this by running fishing events, both coarse and fly, at various fisheries and inviting participants from special needs schools and centres and people who have suffered trauma to come and join in.

The experience helps the participants to gain in confidence and to meet with adults from outside their normal environment; it helps physically disabled people, including those suffering the trauma of war and stroke victims, to participate and experience something that may otherwise be unavailable to them and it enables our volunteers to support those specific communities.
